Chapter Twenty-Three
Slumped against her bedroom door, Izzy felt trapped. On the verge of a panic attack. She didn't do well in confined spaces. They brought back way too many bad memories. Memories she'd hoped were scorched from her mind.
They weren't.
Ethan's strong grip had sent shock-waves through her. His coldness cut like a knife.
With tears cloying the back of her throat, she swallowed them down. The fault for them laid with her, not him. She'd let herself feel things for Ethan when she shouldnât have. And this was the price for her miscalculation.
Humiliation.
Past mistakes taunting her again.
She'd trusted a man with her heart and he'd betrayed it.
But this time it was worse.
Ethan hadn't even known her heart was his for the breaking.
That's why she couldn't really blame him.
Only herself.
Scanning the walls of her room, they were littered with canvases.
On some of them were painted symbols, others words.
They came from the Seven Grandfather Teachings practiced by the First Nations people of her homeland. She'd learnt all about them growing up.
The Wylde family roots in Canada included many unions with its Indigenous people. Her great-grandfather thrice removed had started the trend many moons ago when he married a local Chief's daughter.
It'd caused quite an uproar at the time. But Josiah Wylde hadn't given a damn. An attitude shared by many a Wylde man⦠and woman.
Taking a ragged breath, Izzy concentrated on the words and symbols tacked to the walls. She'd hung them there. Carried the canvases with her everywhere she went in an old leather-bound tube.
They comforted her, and sometimes did even more⦠they'd send her messages about what particular lesson she needed to pay attention to when life got challenging.
Closing her eyes, she called upon her ancestors, as her Auntie Jayne had taught her.
Her life felt like it was spiraling out of control. She needed to do something⦠but what? What was she missing?
Please send me an answer, she silently begged.
In her head, the sound of drums began.
The Ancestors were listening.
A tingling sensation ran down her arms, up her spine... to her third eye.
Izzy allowed the feeling to take her fears away. To trust in that which was greater than herself. It usually paid dividends.
Puffs of smoke danced in her mind. The smell of white sage wafted from memory. On and on the drums pounded... until suddenly they ceased.
The moment of revelation had come.
Opening her eyes, the painting of a Turtle glowed on the wall.
It meant Truth.
But rather than being pleased by the message from her Ancestors, Izzy's forehead fell wearily on her upturned knees.
Not again.
The only word that appeared lately was Truth. And she was tryin' her best. But apparently she wasn't doing a good enough job for them yet.
But was it her fault her real life was concealed by a lie at the moment? She was undercover. Surely her ancestors could appreciate that?
Standing up from her pitiful position, Izzy shook off her negativity.
She needed to get out of this house. See Simon. He was due to leave for Montreal next week.
